Behavioral interview technique is becoming increasingly necessary in order
to get a fair shot at a job interview. Behavioral interviews are
increasingly the norm, and it's feasible that they may eventually replace
the “standard” kind of interview.
What is Behavioral Interview Technique? A behavioral interview is a job
interview which assumes your future behavior will be related to your past,
so the interviewer will ask lots of questions about you previous
performance, what you did in this situation, how you reacted to that etc.

Most job interviews are pretty similar, and as soon as you have had a
couple, you can begin to predict the questions. That's the essence of
behavioral interview technique. If you can, make a list of questions you
would expect to be asked, and then spend some time going over them – don't
concentrate on thinking of answers, instead, try to focus on WHY they are
asking. If you know that, then your answers will have a depth that your

Try and spend a few moments visualizing your career to date. Think of
situations and events that may be of note, and try to imagine how they will
fit into the questions you think may be asked. Having a few quick examples
like this will make you seem very fast mentally, and also very well
prepared.

Don't forget, when you give examples of your past achievements and how you
dealt with a difficult situation etc, that there is no way for them to
verify what you say. I'm not suggesting you lie, as this will most likely
lead to more lies and an awkward position in the future for yourself. But
don't be afraid to stretch things.Your own experiences are unlikely to fit
EXACTLY into what they want to hear, so dress it up if you have to. Everyone
else does, so it's almost a prerequisite for having good behavioral
interview technique.

However nervous you are, or however little you have to say, a potential
employer is not going to accept a one word answer. They'll want more and
more info, until your words give them an idea of who you are. Prepare
yourself for this, and you can give a very convincing performance, and
indeed, if you can tie your answers into your reasonings from Tip 1, as to
why they were asking the questions, you'll instantly become a top candidate.

The knee jerk reaction is to just tell them about your past WORKING
experiences, but this isn't necessarily best. Why not include examples of
other avenues of your life too? If you have interesting hobbies and
pastimes, weave them into your tapestry too. Who looks more like a team
player, the guy who gives an example of being a supervisor in his last role,
or the guy who coached his local youth basketball team to the city
championship last season?
